What is Foster?


Foster is a web-based collaborative platform that connects aspiring musicians and those passionate about cooking with our community through intimate gatherings in unique spaces. Musicians and cooks curate meaningful experiences centered around music or food and utilize Foster as a marketplace to share their talents. Gatherings are open to the Austin community for a ticketed price and serve as a way to come together to support local talent while meeting like-minded individuals.

Are both food and music at every gathering?


No, in most cases, food gatherings and music gatherings are separate. Meaning, when you sign up for a food gathering, you will be there to gather around a table with others to support an aspiring cook. Music gatherings, on the other hand, are centered around live music, and a meal will not be served. It is up to the host, however, to incorporate extra touches to their gatherings, whether it be light snacks at a music gathering or background music at a food gathering.

How does it work?


Browse through the gatherings page to see what food or music gatherings spark your interest. Each gathering listing will feature the musician or cook's profile, a brief description of what the gathering will be like, and what to expect. Once you find something that appeals to you, book your spot. Input your payment information and we will be in touch with additional details, including the gathering location.

Who are Foster cooks and musicians?


Foster cooks and musicians are those that share our values of intentionality, quality, passion and collaboration. Our community of cooks and musicians represent a wide range of talent within the Austin community who are eager to share their passion with you.

Why do I need a profile?


Creating a Foster profile introduces you to your host so they can get to know you better. The more detailed and personalized, the better.

How do I attend a gathering?


Once you’ve created a Foster profile, you can request to book a spot at any Foster food or music gathering. So long as there’s enough spots, your payment will be processed and you will receive an email notifying you of the gathering details. At this time, your card will be processed for the ticketed amount plus tax.

Can I reserve multiple spots?


Yes, when requesting to book your spot, simply select the number of seats you would like to purchase.

How does Foster address my dietary restrictions and food allergies?


Food gathering listings will specify what restrictions and allergies the cook can accommodate. We encourage you to message cooks directly with any questions or concerns you have prior to the gathering date.

What is Foster’s refund and cancellation policy?


You may cancel your spot if you notify the host with more than 48 hours notice. If canceled within less than 48 hours of the gathering, you will not receive a refund for your ticket.

How late can I book a spot at a gathering?


You can book your spot up until the time of the gathering.

When will I receive the address of the gathering?


Once you book your spot and confirm your payment, you will receive an email notifying you of gathering details, including the venue’s address and any additional instructions you may need.

How do payments work?


All payments are processed in advance through our site through our third party payment processor, Braintree. No monetary exchange will occur at the gathering. As soon as your spot is confirmed, your card will be processed for the ticketed amount plus tax.

Will alcohol be provided?


It depends. Gatherings can be either BYOB or we may have alcohol provided through a sponsor. Gathering listings will specify whether or not hosts encourage guest to bring their own beer or if drinks will be served through a sponsorship.

How do I get into my confirmed food or music gathering?


Once you have received confirmation that your spot has been reserved, you will receive details about the gathering. The Host will have your name on the guest list, so please be sure to bring your ID to present at the door.


How can I be a Foster Cook?


Once you sign up and create a Foster profile, we ask that all interested cooks fill out a short application telling us about themselves and their cooking background. If we feel you’re a good fit, you will receive a Foster cook badge on your profile and be able to list your gathering and cook at any food gathering.

How do I list a food gathering on Foster?


Once approved as a Foster cook click “Create New Gathering” to start curating your food gathering. Be sure to be as descriptive and creative as possible when listing your gathering description. If you need help capturing content, reach out to us and we can collaborate to get the photos needed. We encourage you to check out our helpful cook and host guidelines on how to make your gathering a success.

What dietary restrictions should I accommodate?


This is ultimately up to you. When filling out your menu details, please specify which restrictions you can accommodate. Be realistic and honest when considering this for your menu. Keep in mind, the more dietary restrictions and preferences you can accommodate, the more guests you will likely attract.

How far in advance do I need to list my gathering?


All gatherings are required to be listed at least 2 weeks in advance of the date. However, we encourage gatherings be listed 3-4 weeks in advance. This allows time for you to share the gathering with friends and friends of friends, as well as enables us to promote your Gathering through our channels.

How can I partner with a Foster host or local venue to hold a gathering?


When filling out your chef application, please select “I would like help finding a partnering host”. When you send in your application, the Foster team will take note of this and follow up with you regarding next steps.

How are ticketed prices determined?


As a Foster cook, you have the power to set the price per person for your food gathering. We ask that you price your meal based on cost of ingredients, time spent preparing the meal, your experience level, as well as what a similar meal would be priced at a local restaurant.

Does Foster take a commission on the price of my meal when I host one?


Foster takes a 15% transaction fee of each ticket sold. If you partner with a Foster host or venue, an additional 10% transaction fee per ticket will be deducted to cover the cost of holding the gathering in their space.

When will I get paid for the meal I hosted?


Foster has partnered with Braintree for all payment transactions. You will receive your payment within 5 days of your gathering.

How do I contact my guests?

What should I expect during my food gathering?


Although each gathering is unique in its own way, all food gatherings have a similar structure so guests know what to expect. Food gatherings typically last around 2 hours. If you are hosting your gathering in your own space, make sure to create a warm and open environment. The meal should be 95% completed by the time guests arrive. Encourage conversation before the meal for everyone to get acquainted and become comfortable with who they will be dining with. Time your meal accordingly, as you should plan to serve the first dish within 15 minutes of guests arriving. We also encourage all of our cooks to dine with their guests, sharing your story and your inspiration behind your meal. This authenticity creates a unique experience guests cannot get elsewhere. Encourage your guests to ask questions, take pictures, and facilitate conversation. It is up to you to decide how long you would like to allow for mingling after the meal. Be sure to set a hard end time in your gathering listing so guests know what to expect and make necessary arrangements.

What if a guest cancels their seat?


Guests can cancel their seat as long as it is 48+ hours of the Gathering for a full refund. If it is less than 48 hours before the gathering, the guest will still be charged. This is to provide you with enough time to make necessary arrangements. Foster will notify you once a guest cancels their seat. Note that once a seat is cancelled, it will become available for other guests to reserve. If you are hosting the gathering in your space, it is up to you to decide whether or not you would like to fill the seat. If you are partnering with a Foster host, be sure to communicate with them with regards to filling spots within a small window of gathering time.

What if I have to cancel a meal I planned?


Although we highly discourage cancelling a meal, we understand that sometimes unforeseen circumstances happen. If you have to cancel your event, you must notify us 48+ hours before the gathering to prevent any associated fees. In this scenario, be sure to message all your guests to let them know and inform them of a rescheduled date. If you cancel less than 48 hours prior to your gathering, cancellation fees will apply.


How can I be a Foster musician?


We believe in passion and raw talent, regardless of genre or how well-known you are. Send us links of your music and fill out our short application and we’ll be in touch within 1 week of your submission. If we feel you’re a good fit, we will work with you on next steps and you will be able to list your gathering of the Foster ATX website.

Who decides who performs at Foster music gatherings?


Once you are a Foster musician, you will be able to perform at any Foster gathering. You may decide to hold some gatherings in your own home, while others you may seek a third-party host or venue, in which case you will work with them directly to curate the experience.

What type of setup do I need to perform at a Foster music gathering?


We strive to preserve an intimate atmosphere by encouraging Foster musicians to perform stripped back sets. In most cases, Foster musicians will use un-amplified vocals, utilize instruments that can be made acoustic and use minimal back line. If you do wish have a full setup and the venue can allow it, equipment costs will not be covered by Foster ATX and is therefore up to the musician to cover the costs.

How are Foster gatherings different than normal shows?


Foster music gatherings are held in unconventional spaces, creating an intimate environment where the music is the focal point. Gatherings are intentional about cultivating an atmosphere where connection and collaboration are encouraged. We believe this creates a deeper bond between artists and fans.

Where are music gatherings held?


We love intimate environments, and believe that a living room, backyard or other unique space is perfect to create a warm atmosphere. Need help finding a space? Let us know and we’ll work together to help find the perfect space for your gathering.

How can I partner with a Foster host or local venue to hold my music gathering?

Am I at risk of noise complaints?


This is why we ask that all shows be stripped down. Additionally, we require that all gatherings are over by 10:30pm to prevent this being an issue. We encourage hosts to talk with their neighbors beforehand to let them know the times as well as expected noise level.

Does Foster take a commission on the price of my music gathering when I perform at one?


We view this as a co-hosted event between Foster, the musician and the venue. We allocate tickets based on this and distribute ticket sales accordingly. Foster takes 40% of ticket sales for matching the musician and the space, acting as the ticket platform, marketing and promotion, and executing the gathering day of. The artist is compensated for their time with 50% of ticket sales and the host/venue receives 10% as a small thank you for opening up their space.

When will I get paid for my music gathering?


Foster has partnered with Braintree for all payment transactions. You will receive your payment within 5 days of your gathering.

Music gatherings consist of two 35 minute sets with an intermission.The first set is to start 30 minutes after guest’s arrival. Music gatherings typically last 2-3 hours. It’s up to you to decide how long you would like to allow for mingling after the performance. Be sure to set a hard end time so guests know what to expect and make necessary arrangements.

What if a guest cancels their spot?


Guests can cancel their seat as long as it is 48+ hours of the gathering for a full refund. If it is less than 48 hours before the gathering, the guest will still be charged. Foster will notify you once guests cancel their seats. Note that once a seat is cancelled, it will become available for other guests to reserve. Is there any safety measures I should take prior to hosting my music gathering?


Be sure to check with your homeowner’s and renter’s insurance prior to holding your gathering, just to make sure you’re covered in case something were to happen. We encourage you to talk with your neighbors ahead of time so there are no concerns about noise or amount of cars the night of your gathering.


Why should I become a Foster host?


By offering your space to host a food or music gathering, you are enabling the talent hidden within the heart of our community. You are providing cooks and musicians with an opportunity to share their passion with neighbors, fellow music lovers, foodies and other talented artists.

How often can I host?


This will vary case by case. For culinary gatherings, we ask that you host no more than 6 times a year. Foster gatherings do not fall in the purview of restaurant regulations, so we do not recommend consistently hosting a culinary gathering in your home. As for music gatherings, we encourage you to host when you are able to do so while dedicating the time it needs to create a thoughtful gathering.

How can I host a Foster food or music gathering?


Tell us a bit about yourself and your space. Once approved, we encourage you to reach out to Foster cooks and musicians to curate unique experiences centered around food or music. We’ll reach out with opportunities as they arise as well.

Can I request a specific musician or cook who hasn’t participated in a Foster gathering before?


Absolutely. However, we do have a vetting process for cooks and musicians who would like to join our community. Direct them to our website to fill out the application so we can make sure they are a good fit.

How large of a space do I need to host a gathering?


We love intimate environments, and believe that a living room or backyard is the perfect place to create a welcoming atmosphere. Most people underestimate how many people their place can hold. Try moving some things around to optimize your space. Typical music gatherings range from 25 to 50 people, while food gatherings range anywhere from 4 - 15 people.

How will I be compensated?


We understand that hosting a gathering requires a lot of time and effort. We also believe special touches to each gathering make the mood and tone of the gathering all the more memorable. To compensate for this, hosts will receive 10% of each ticket sold to cover costs of setup and cleanup. Hosts will receive this compensation within 5 days following their food or music gathering.

Can I invite friends?


Of course. Feel free to share the gathering link with your friends and friends of friends so they can request to book a spot through the Foster website.

How can I promote my food or music gathering?


We encourage you to use all social channels to spread the word about your upcoming gathering. Foster will also be actively promoting your gathering through our own channels, emails, and blog posts.

What happens if something comes up and I have to cancel a gathering?


We strongly discourage canceling any events. We do understand that some things come up, so if it is completely unavoidable, please reach out to Foster and we will work together to find the best solution. Keep in mind that once a guest is looking forward to an event that is then canceled, it could affect future events you decide to host. Depending on when the event is canceled, certain fees may apply.
